The government of #FouadSiniora issued the following two decisions:
1. Declaring Hezbollah’s telecommunications network illegal and ordering its dismantlement.
2. Dismissing Brigadier General Wafiq Shuqair, head of security at Beirut International Airport and a figure close to Hezbollah

The General Confederation of Lebanese Workers called for a general strike in protest against rising prices and deteriorating living conditions.
Hezbollah and the Amal Movement exploited the protests to block the airport road using burning tires and dirt barricades.

Armed Hezbollah and Amal fighters spread throughout the streets of #Beirut, carrying weapons and wearing masks.
Armed clashes then erupted between Hezbollah supporters and supporters of the Future Movement in several neighborhoods of the capital.

Hezbollah gunmen imposed a siege around the offices of Future TV and Al-Mustaqbal newspaper in #Beirut.
Hezbollah used its weapons to intimidate the residents of Beirut and Mount #Lebanon and impose its decisions by force.

Slide 9: May 8, 2008 – 3:00 PM
Intimidation and killings continued.
In a televised speech, Ha Nasrallah declared that Hezbollah’s telecommunications network constituted a “weapon of resistance”.
He warned that any hand reaching for this weapon “would be cut off,” describing the government’s decisions as “a declaration of open war”.

Armed operations continued.
Gunmen stormed the offices of Future TV in Beirut and set them on fire.
#SaadHariri ’s residence in Qoreitem was also targeted with rockets, while Walid Jumblatt’s residence in Clemenceau was placed under siege.
